2017 #4 CDIO ACADEMY – Personality

Hello everyone, my name is Liao Po-Yu. my hometown is in Kaoshiung. my major is Information Engineering and Computer Science. My specialty is writing computer programs. I think I am creative. I like to think somethings whether it is possible or impossible. Sometime I can make its come true but sometime I can’t. Baseball is my favorite, I am a shortstop player, and somtimes be a pitcher. And what I learn in baseball the most is “teamwork”. I enjoy teamwork everywhere and that’s why I have great interpersonal relationships. My friends always said that I’m very outgoing, and I like to meet new friends.So I’m so exciting to meet all of you in Calgary.


2017 #3 CDIO ACADEMY – Ethical

Alice buys an autonomous vehicle from Bob, who sells them. The autonomous vehicle has different settings, some more aggressive (where the autonomous vehicle drives faster and brakes harder), and some less. Alice sets the autonomous vehicle to its most aggressive setting. One night on a dark and wet road, Alice hits a pedestrian, Carlos, who was jaywalking. Carlos is badly hurt.


 In this situation, I think that Carlos will need to take the responsibility of this accident. Though he is the people who get hurt, but he is the first violation of the incident. Autonomous car will not do illegal behavior, so when it encounters the incident that it can’t avoid, it won’t have time to make the appropriate response. Therefore, there are some ways to talk about this situation:

If you were the autonomous car owner, you can choose 2 motion about the system, while there is a person jaywalk when your car drive through the zebra crossing, you can choose to protect the drivers and just hit the person or protect the person but the driver will get hurt. What will you choose while you are the driver?If me, i will choose to protect the driver. There is no way to protect the people who violate the rule of traffic.

I think government should set the law clearly, the people who violate should be wrong no matter he or she get hurt badly. This will protect the driver and autonomous car, because he probably drive in the right way, so didn’t need to take the responsible of the accident.


One. Search the internet and other sources and list the different types of technology that may be found in autonomous vehicles (include at least one more option than those listed above). Describe each technology in 1-2 sentences, and include at least one web link.

1.      Environmental awareness technology: The environment-aware module is equivalent to the eyes and ears of an autonomous vehicle, and the autonomous vehicle uses the environment-aware module to identify the surrounding environment information and provide information support for its behavioral decision.

2.      Machine deep learning: Is the ability of a machine learning from experience. The machines no longer need to be instilled by one by one, they can be “educated”. It can learn from the mistake and won’t make the mistake next time. It can be more and more smarter.

Two. Select one type of technology and look at it in greater detail. How is it currently being used? What are its benefits and drawbacks? What is its future potential? Don’t forget to include references to any sources you may have used.

So I’m going to choose machine deep learning about autonomous vehicles. Deep learning needs three steps: building a web, setting a goal, and start to learning.

The basis of deep learning is the distributed representation of machine learning. On this basis, deep learning assumes that the process of this interaction can be divided into multiple levels, representing the multi-level abstraction of the observed values. Different layers and layers of scale can be used for different levels of abstraction. The benefits of deep learning is that they can rely on the situation encountered on the road for learning, and they can solved the problem clearly when they face the same problem next time.The drawbacks of deep learning is that it can’t deal with problem when they face a problem that they didn’t mentioned before. It will be probably cause bigger problem. I think deep learning will be stronger in the future. They are likely to go beyond human learning, and to this point, more and more people will be replaced by the machine.

ONE. SAE International has a formal classification system for autonomous vehicles, ranging from level 0 (not automated) to level 5 (fully automated). Briefly describe each of the levels.

  1. no automation: no vehicle control but automated system issues warning.
  2. Driver assistance (hands on): Driver should control vehicles, but automated system sometimes can play a role. For example, ABS system.
  3. Partial automation (hands off): The automated system takes full control of the vehicle
  4. Conditional automation: The driver can safely turn their attention away from the driving tasks, for example, driver can watch movie or play cellphone in the vehicles.
  5. High automation: no driver attention is ever required for safety, for example, driver can sleep in the vehicle. (steering wheel)
  6. Full automation: Driver didn’t need to stay in the vehicles, it can make its own decisions. (No steering wheel)

TWO. Use the internet to find at least two examples of autonomous vehicles that already exist. Which companies/universities/groups are they from? What autonomous behaviour do they exhibit (i.e., can parallel park itself, can drive itself)? How have they been tested?

1.    Tesla model s (auto pilot), it comes from America company, called Tesla. While the driver releases the steering wheel with both hands, the Model S can continue to travel along the driveway. The vehicle speed is automatically reduced when the vehicle is present in the front to ensure a safe distance, or even automatically.They tested on the road. The driver sit in the vehicle and he didn’t touch the steering wheel, just that the drive by its own.

2.Google driverless car, it comes from American company, called google. The most powerful place about google driverless car is machine learning. It can drive to his own self, and didn’t need any driver sit in the car. They tested their google driverless car near their headquarters. There are no driver in the vehicle, and they tested perfectly.

THREE.  Consider the SAE classifications from the question 1. At which level would each of the vehicles discussed in question 2 be? Provide rationale for your decisions.

I think tesla model s is about level 3 of the SAE. There is a news in US that one people was killed because of the accident driving the tesla vehicle. He slept on the car when he was on the highway, but when the Tesla car drive near the truck, the truck didn’t closed its back door, the model s could’t determine what it was, and drove into the truck. Above the news I mentioned that we still need to concentrate driving the car and the car isn’t smart enough to pull away all of the problems. So I grade level 3 to Tesla model s.

FOUR. Please state at least 3 possible applications for autonomous vehicles, and why they would be beneficial for those applications.

1.Robot taxi, If there is robot taxi in the future, the company of taxi can saved huge money about manpower. When we want to go anywhere, we just need to take out our smartphone, and click the nearest taxi from us, robot taxi will be more safe than the taxi nowadays.

2.IOV (internet of vehicle), IOV can combined people, cars, roads and the environment of technology, we can achieve traffic accident , electronic charges, remote monitoring, navigation route planning, vehicle anti-theft and other functions.

3.Disabled (physically challenged) autonomous vehicle, people that have some physically challenged or visually challenged can’t drive the car nowadays, but in the future, this application can surely help them relieve inconvenience driving cars. What they need is to set up the destination and they can enjoy the trip easier.
